basketball rules

  1. Each individual adult participant (19+ eligible) must create a profile on our web site and electronically sign the roster/waiver form in order to be eligible for participation in any Cities Sports Connection – CSCSPORTS.com league/event/tournament or other associated activity.  Please be aware that there are inherent risks to participating in any athletic activity. CSC does not provide insurance for the participants of our leagues. Each player as a result of participation in the leagues assumes all liability and risk of injury. It is strongly recommended that each player obtain medical and liability insurance prior to participating in any athletic or league activity.
  2. All TEAM ROSTERS are deemed final at the end of regular season play. PLAYERS must participate in THREE (3) OR MORE MATCHES/GAMES during the regular season in order to be CONFIRMED on the team roster. ONLY CONFIRMED TEAM ROSTER PLAYERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY DURING THE POST-SEASON SCHEDULE.
  3. As a rule, each participant is allowed to be on one team roster per league/level/night. We are happy to allow people to play on more than one team/night if facility space allows and if you inform CSC prior to the start of the league season. Any player not confirmed on a team roster is not eligible to play on that team during the post-season.
  4. Substitutes that have played with your team during the season are not allowed to participate in the playoffs in any of our CSC leagues (it’s a basic fairness issue for all of the other teams in your league). The Honor Code is always in effect here as well. For any exceptions, please contact CSC Sports.
  5. More than one forfeit without at least 48-hour notice will give CSC the authority to remove that team from any/all of the remaining games (including post-season). Any Forfeit will be used in a tie-breaker situation for playoff seeding. Teams want to have games, and look forward to playing. A forfeit severly lessens the team experience.
  6. Each team is required to use team uniforms or an identified team color during each game. Each team member needs to bring this uniform or team color shirt to each game, along with a white shirt in case the other team uses the same color, to use for identification purposes. Ask a CSC representative or give us a call @ (612) 929-9009 for further assistance.
  7. Standard Division I college rules (ie: Big Ten games, etc.) apply in all situations not specific to CSC league rules as outlined below:
  8. ALL DECISIONS OF THE OFFICIALS ARE FINAL!. We all know that basketball is a challenging sport to officiate, so give your refs some credit. Any questionable talk directed toward the officials will result in a warning to the player and to the team. Further abuse will earn you a technical and possible ejection, which is up to the discretion of the referee. Captains are the official team representatives and are responsible for the behavior and actions of all team players and associated individuals. Just play ball!
  9. Games consist of TWO 20-minute halves with continually running time. Each team is allowed two time-outs per game. The last 30 seconds of the 1st half will have stop-time, and the last 1 minute of the 2nd will have stop-time. If the game remains tied, one 2 minute overtime period, with the last 30 seconds of stop-time will be played. Following the end of that overtime period, if the score remains tied, an untimed second overtime will be played, where the first team to score 4 additional points will be the winner.
  10. Games are 5v5, with a maximum of five players on the court at all times. The minimum number of players a team may compete with is four.
  11. Substitutions may occur at any dead-ball situation (a whistle). The game officials must be made aware of all substitutions.
  12. Each team is required to supply an individual to keep track of score, team fouls and other necessary information to ensure the game runs smoothly and accurately. This may be a team member or an appointed team representative.
  13. Alternate possession rule is in effect for the entire length of the contest, after the initial tip to start the game.
  14. There is NO DUNKING ALLOWED in CSC Basketball (snapping down of the rim). This includes before, during and after each game. A Technical Foul will be issued for any such activity. As always, you break it, you buy it!
  15. Two technical foul violations for any player is a ticket to the bench for the rest of the day. Keep it clean and have fun out there!
  16. Seven team fouls in a half earns the opponent the bonus (one-and-one free throws). The double bonus (two free throws) is in effect starting with the tenth team foul per half.
  17. All fouls are team fouls (including technicals) and not charged as individual fouls.
  18. Any individual that receives TWO technical fouls is ejected from the game and must leave the facility before the game resumes; A team that accumulates FOUR technical fouls automatically forfeits the game.
  19. Each team is responsible for the conduct of their fans (non-participating team supporters). The official has discretion in all situations. If there are any fans who are being disruptive to the officials or the opposing team, the supervisor or official have the authority to remove those people from the facility.
  20. Thanks again for playing with Cities Sports Connection! As always, we hope you have a blast during your league season!!!

  21. 3v3 Additional Rules & Regulations outlined below

    PLAYING AREA:

3v3 Basketball games are played on a single half-court.  Boundary lines vary depending on venue.

    PLAYING ROSTER:

The maximum numbers of players on the court is three.  The minimum number of players is two.

    FORMAT:

Each team plays two games per night during the regular season.  Games are 20 minutes total consisting of two 10 minute halves (final minute and a half is stop time for games within 10 points, otherwise it remains running clock).  Each team is allowed two 30-second timeouts per game.

Overtime- In the event of a tie at the end of regulation a one minute stop time period is played. Fouls carry over and each team is permitted one timeout each. In the event of a tie at the end of the overtime a sudden death is played. The sudden death is not timed. It’s first team to score four points wins. No timeouts, but fouls still carry over.

    SCORING:

Every successful shot from within the arc is awarded two points.  Successful shots from behind the arc are awarded three points.  Free throws are one point.  Shooting fouls will be awarded the number of free throw attempts equal to the value of a successful shot from the area where the foul occurred. On the 7th team foul a team will shoot 1 and 1. On the 10th team foul a team will shoot 2 shots (fouls carry over between halves).

    TEAM POSSESSION:

Initial possession shall be determined by a coin flip, rock-paper-scissors, odd-even fingers, by the team with the fanciest uniforms, or by some other meaningful measure of differentiation… 🙂

When a team gains possession (at the start of game or after an opponent’s successful shot), a member of that team must possess the ball with both feet behind the arc before any scoring attempt is made.  Failure to do so will result in a violation, and the other team shall be awarded possession.

Following each successful field goal or last free throw:

(Not “make it, take it”) A player from the non-scoring team will resume the game by passing the ball in, after a check up, from behind the arc. The defensive team is not allowed to play for the ball until the ball is passed in.
Following each unsuccessful field goal or last free throw:
If the offensive team rebounds the ball, it may continue to attempt to score without returning the ball behind the arc.  If the defensive team rebounds or steals the ball, it must return the ball behind the arc (by passing or dribbling).  Possession of the ball given to either team following any dead ball situation shall start with an exchange of the ball (‘check the ball’) between the defensive and the offensive player behind the arc at the top of the arc.

The player in possession at the top of the arc is required to pass the ball to begin play. If the player in possession at the top of the arc dribbles, attempts a shot, or fails to check the ball to the defense prior to putting the ball in play, a violation will result, and the defending team is then awarded possession.

A player is considered to be “behind the arc” when both feet are fully behind the arc.

In the event of a jump/held ball situation, we will alternate possessions.

    SUBSTITUTIONS:

Substitutions can be done by any team when the ball becomes dead, prior to the check-ball. The substitute can enter the game after his teammate steps off the court and establishes a physical contact with him. Substitutions can only take place behind the end line opposite the basket and substitutions require no action from the referees or table officials.

    THREE-SECOND VIOLATION:

A player shall not be permitted to have any part of his or her body remain in the free throw lane for more than three consecutive seconds while a live ball is in control of that player’s team. The count resets after a shot attempt.

    STALLING:

Stalling or failing to play actively (i.e. not attempting to score) shall be a violation (during running clock you cannot stall). During stop time you cannot be called for stalling since the opposing team can foul to stop the clock.
Note: As courts are not equipped with shot clocks, if a team is not sufficiently trying to attack the basket, the supervisor may give them a warning by counting a 10 second shot countdown as deemed necessary.

    FOULS:

Personal and team fouls are recorded (penalty free throws are awarded on the 7th team foul). There are no shooting fouls (until the 7th team foul). If a player is fouled in the act of shooting, and the basket goes in, the basket counts. During stop time only- A team gets one foul to give. On the 2nd foul the opposing team is awarded two free throws. This rule does not apply if the game is over 10 points apart, meaning the clock would be running. This is to prevent excessive fouling at the end of the game.      However, a player deemed to be excessively fouling will be warned and subsequently disqualified if the behavior continues.  This is on-your-honor game play, so everyone if expected to respect the game and their opponents at all times and in all ways.

    DISQUALIFICATION:

A player committing two unsportsmanlike fouls will be disqualified from the game by the supervisor. The organizer may also disqualify the entire team from the event depending on the other team members’ contribution (also through non-action) to the aforementioned behavior. It is the responsibility of each teams captain to make sure his team is playing fairly and with good sportsmanship.
